Can you see the Sahara in one day from Agadir?

Not the real Sahara: the big dune seas are 7 to 10 hours away by road. But near Agadir there are beautiful golden dunes, sometimes called the “mini Sahara”, where you can ride a 4×4, take a camel ride and have a traditional lunch. It is perfect if you have little time or travel with young children.

Zagora: the best 2-day desert tour

Zagora is the closest desert area with overnight camps. The road crosses the Anti-Atlas and the Draa valley, Morocco’s longest palm grove. In the late afternoon you ride camels to the camp, have dinner with music and sleep under the stars. The dunes are smaller than in Merzouga, but it is the best choice if you have only two days.

Merzouga: the classic Sahara experience

Merzouga is home to Erg Chebbi, the famous orange dunes that rise up to about 150 metres. The 3-day tour passes through Ouarzazate, the Dades valley and the Todra gorges before a sunset camel trek to a desert camp. It is long by road (about 700 km from Agadir), but it is the iconic Sahara you see in photos.

Chegaga: the wild and remote desert

Erg Chegaga is reached by 4×4 from M’hamid, crossing stony desert and the dry lake Iriqui. There are fewer tourists and no paved road to the dunes, which makes it feel truly remote. Choose it if you want silence and adventure.

Best time for a desert tour

  • October to April: the best season, with warm days and cool nights.
  • December and January: nights can be close to freezing; camps provide thick blankets.
  • June to August: very hot during the day; travel only if you cope well with heat.

What to pack

  • A warm jacket or fleece for the night
  • A scarf (cheche) against sun and sand
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm
  • A head torch and a power bank
  • Comfortable shoes and a small bag for the night in camp

What a night in a desert camp looks like

  1. Late afternoon: you leave the vehicles and ride camels into the dunes for about one to two hours.
  2. Sunset: you climb a dune to watch the sky turn orange and pink.
  3. Evening: mint tea, a traditional dinner (often tajine or couscous) and Berber music around the fire.
  4. Night: with no city lights, the stars are incredible. You sleep in a tent with a real bed and blankets.
  5. Morning: sunrise over the dunes, breakfast and the camel ride or 4×4 back to the road.

Is the long drive worth it?

The road to Merzouga is long, but it is not wasted time: the journey crosses the High Atlas, the kasbahs of Ouarzazate, the Dades valley and the Todra gorges, which are highlights in themselves. If you prefer less driving, choose Zagora in 2 days, or stay near the coast with a mini Sahara jeep safari and a sunset camel ride.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Packing only summer clothes: desert nights are cold most of the year.
  • Bringing a big suitcase to the camp: take a small bag for the night and leave the rest in the vehicle.
  • Choosing a 2-day trip to Merzouga: it is too far; you would spend almost all the time in the car.
  • Forgetting cash: there are few ATMs in the desert areas.

How to combine the desert with the rest of your trip

A good plan for one week in southern Morocco: arrive in Agadir and enjoy the best activities in Agadir, spend a morning in Paradise Valley, then leave for a 2 or 3-day desert tour. If you also want to see Marrakech, read our guide to the Agadir to Marrakech day trip or choose the 6-day Sahara and imperial cities tour, which includes both.

Our guide’s tip

“On the camel ride, wrap your scarf around your head like a turban and keep your camera in a zipped bag; fine sand gets everywhere. At the camp, walk a few minutes away from the lights after dinner and lie down on the sand: on a clear night you can see the Milky Way. In the morning, wake up 30 minutes before sunrise and climb the dune behind the camp. It is the moment every traveller remembers.” — Your YouTours guide
