Where do camel rides take place near Agadir?

There are no big Sahara dunes in Agadir itself, but the coast north of the city has sandy dunes, eucalyptus woods and long empty beaches. These are the three areas we use most:

The coastal dunes north of Agadir

Fifteen to twenty minutes from the hotel zone, this is the most popular area for a short ride. You walk through soft sand and a eucalyptus forest and finish with a view of the Atlantic. It is the area used for our camel ride with mint tea.

The Timlaline dunes near Taghazout

The Timlaline dunes are higher and more golden, and they feel like a small desert. They are perfect at sunset. We use them for the Timlaline quad, camel, sandboarding and dinner combo and for the Paradise Valley and camel ride day.

The mini Sahara south of Agadir

If you want real desert scenery in a day, the “mini Sahara” dunes south of the city can be visited by 4×4. Our mini Sahara and wild beach jeep tour includes a camel ride.

What happens during a camel ride?

  1. Pickup: our driver collects you at your hotel or riad and drives you to the camel camp.
  2. Welcome and safety briefing: the handler explains how to sit and how to hold on. Many guests are surprised by how high a camel is when it stands up.
  3. Mounting: the camel kneels, you sit in the saddle and lean back while it stands up, back legs first.
  4. The ride: the handler leads the camels on foot at walking pace. There is no steering and no speed, so you can relax and take photos.
  5. Mint tea break: on the classic ride you stop for Moroccan mint tea; on the sunset ride you continue to the camp for a barbecue dinner.
  6. Return: you are driven back to your hotel.

When is the best time for a camel ride?

Camel rides run all year in Agadir because the climate is mild. The best moments are:

  • Late afternoon and sunset: the light is warm, the sand turns gold and the temperature is pleasant. This is the favourite slot for couples and photographers.
  • Morning: a good choice in July and August, when the middle of the day can be hot on the dunes.
  • Winter (November to February): sunny days of around 20°C are ideal, but bring a light jacket for the evening, as it cools down quickly after sunset.

Is a camel ride suitable for children?

Yes. A camel ride is one of the easiest activities in Agadir for families. Children from about 4 years old can ride with an adult or on their own camel led by the handler. The animals walk slowly and the ride lasts about an hour, which is the right length for young children. For more ideas, read our guide to Agadir with kids.

Camel welfare: what we expect from our partners

We only work with camel owners who treat their animals well. Here is what we check, and what you can look for yourself:

  • Camels have shade, water and rest between rides.
  • Saddles are padded and fitted properly.
  • Animals are not overloaded: one adult per camel, or an adult with a small child.
  • Handlers walk at the camel’s pace and never hit the animals.

If something does not look right during your ride, tell your guide or contact us. Your feedback helps us choose the best partners.

What to wear and bring

  • Long trousers or leggings: they are more comfortable on the saddle than shorts.
  • Closed shoes or sandals with straps: you may walk a little in the sand.
  • Sunglasses, sun cream and a hat or scarf: the sun is strong on the dunes.
  • A light jacket for sunset rides, especially in winter.
  • A phone strap or small bag: keep your hands free to hold the saddle when the camel stands up and sits down.

Photo tips from our guides

  • Ask the handler to take a photo of your group from the front, with the dunes behind you. They know the best spots.
  • At sunset, shoot towards the sun for silhouettes of the caravan on the ridge.
  • Do not take photos while the camel is standing up or kneeling down. Hold on with both hands.
  • A wide-angle phone lens works better than zoom on the dunes.

How much should a camel ride cost?

Prices on the beach and in the street vary a lot. A fair price for a guided one-hour ride with transport is around €18 to €25 per person. Very cheap offers often mean no transport, a shorter ride or a stop in a shop. With YouTours the price is fixed and includes hotel pickup and mint tea, and you pay on the day in cash with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Combine your camel ride with other activities

Many guests combine a camel ride with something more active. The quad biking tour and the buggy safari run in the same area, and the Paradise Valley and camel ride day adds the famous natural pools of the Atlas foothills.
