Why visit Essaouira?

Essaouira is a fortified port town on the Atlantic with white houses, blue doors and a relaxed atmosphere. Its medina is listed by UNESCO and is easy to walk around, with fewer hustlers than Marrakech. The town is famous for its crafts (thuya wood, silver jewellery, paintings), its fresh seafood and the Gnaoua music festival in June. Strong trade winds make it a top spot for kitesurfing, and keep the town cool in summer.

What to see in Essaouira

The Skala de la Ville ramparts

Walk along the 18th-century sea walls with their old bronze cannons and enjoy the view of the waves crashing on the rocks. It is one of the most photographed places in Morocco.

The fishing port

Hundreds of blue wooden boats, fishermen repairing nets and seagulls everywhere: the port is lively from the morning. You can choose fresh fish at the stalls and have it grilled on the spot.

The medina and souks

The main street is easy to follow and leads to small squares and covered markets. Look for thuya wood boxes, Berber jewellery, spices, leather and argan oil products. Prices are often more reasonable than in Marrakech, but you should still bargain politely.

The Mellah and Bab Doukkala

The old Jewish quarter tells the story of Essaouira as a historic trading port. It is quieter and shows a more authentic side of the town.

The beach

The long beach south of the medina is better for walking and watching kitesurfers than for swimming, because of the wind. Camel and horse rides are offered there too.

The tree-climbing goats on the way

The road between Agadir and Essaouira crosses the argan forest, where goats climb into the trees to eat the fruit. It is one of the most unusual sights in Morocco. Read our guide to the tree-climbing goats of Morocco to understand what is natural and what is staged for tourists, and how to see them responsibly.

Essaouira or Marrakech?

If you only have time for one day trip, choose based on your style:

  • Choose Essaouira for a relaxed day by the sea, fresh fish, easy shopping and fewer crowds.
  • Choose Marrakech for big monuments, the Jemaa el-Fna square and the energy of a large imperial city.

Tips for your Essaouira day trip

  • Bring a jacket: Essaouira is often windy and cooler than Agadir, even in summer.
  • Carry cash: small shops and fish stalls rarely accept cards.
  • Agree the price before grilled fish: ask the price per kilo and for cooking before ordering at the port.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: the medina streets are paved and uneven in places.
  • Best season: all year; spring and autumn are the most pleasant. See the best time to visit Agadir.

Where to eat in Essaouira

Essaouira is the best place on the coast for seafood. At the grill stalls between the port and the medina, you choose your fish, prawns or calamari and they are grilled in front of you. Always ask the price per kilo and agree on the total before cooking. Inside the medina, small restaurants serve tajines, couscous and fish pastilla. For a quick snack, try a sardine sandwich or fresh orange juice on Place Moulay Hassan.

Shopping tips in Essaouira

  • Thuya wood: Essaouira is famous for boxes, chess sets and small furniture made of fragrant thuya wood. Workshops are under the ramparts.
  • Silver jewellery: look for Berber designs in the jewellers’ souk.
  • Art: Essaouira has many galleries with paintings by local artists.
  • Argan oil: buy it at the cooperative on the way, where quality is guaranteed.

Bargaining is normal, but sellers are generally less insistent than in Marrakech.
