Hammam in Agadir: What to Expect, Prices and Etiquette

Traditional Moroccan hammam with black soap and argan oil

A hammam in Agadir is a traditional Moroccan steam bath where you relax in the heat, get scrubbed with black soap and a kessa glove, and often finish with an argan oil massage. In a spa hammam for tourists, a ritual with scrub and massage costs from about €35 and lasts around 1.5 to 2 hours. It is relaxing, very good for the skin and perfect after a day of quad, camel or desert activities. This guide explains what to expect, what to wear and how to choose.

What happens during a hammam, step by step

  1. Welcome: you get a robe, a towel and sandals, and often a glass of mint tea.
  2. The steam room: you relax in a warm, humid room for 10 to 15 minutes. The heat opens the pores and softens the skin.
  3. Black soap (savon beldi): an attendant applies a natural olive-based black soap on your body. You rest a few more minutes.
  4. The scrub with the kessa glove: the attendant scrubs your whole body firmly. You will be surprised by how much dead skin comes off. Say “shwiya” (gently) if it is too strong.
  5. Rinse and rhassoul clay: warm water, sometimes followed by a mask of rhassoul, a mineral clay from the Atlas Mountains, for the skin or hair.
  6. Rest: you relax in a cooler room with tea.
  7. Argan oil massage: a relaxing massage with warm argan oil, the “liquid gold” of the Agadir region.

What to wear in a hammam

In a spa hammam, most visitors wear swimwear or the disposable underwear provided. Women often keep only the bottom part, but you can keep what makes you comfortable. Attendants are used to all preferences. In a public hammam, locals usually wear underwear; complete nudity is not common.

Hammam etiquette

  • Shower and remove make-up before the steam room if possible.
  • Remove jewellery and leave valuables at the hotel.
  • Tell the attendant if you have sensitive skin, a sunburn or a recent tattoo; avoid the scrub in that case.
  • Drink water before and after: the heat makes you sweat a lot.
  • A small tip for the attendant is appreciated if you are happy with the service.

When not to do a hammam

Avoid the hammam with a strong sunburn, a fresh tattoo, an open wound, heart problems or high blood pressure, and ask your doctor if you are pregnant. Plan the hammam at the end of your trip if you want your tan to last a bit longer: the scrub removes the top layer of skin.

Is a hammam good after activities?

Yes. After a quad ride, a buggy safari or a day in the dunes, a hammam removes sand and dust and relaxes your muscles. Many guests book it on the evening of a Timlaline dunes day or after a mini Sahara jeep safari. Couples often combine it with a sunset camel ride for a romantic day.

Argan oil: the secret of the massage

The argan tree grows only in south-west Morocco, around Agadir and Essaouira. Its oil is pressed by hand in women’s cooperatives and is rich in vitamin E. Cosmetic argan oil (from raw kernels) is used for massages and skin care; culinary argan oil (from roasted kernels) has a nutty taste. Learn how it is made in our guide to the tree-climbing goats and argan forest, and see where to buy it in our Souk El Had guide.

Hammam for couples, groups and men

Many spas in Agadir offer a couples’ ritual in a private room, which is a lovely way to end a holiday. Groups of friends can book together too. Men are welcome in spa hammams; the scrub is done by a male or female attendant depending on the spa, and you can ask for your preference when you book. In public hammams, men and women are always separated.

How to choose a good hammam in Agadir

  • Cleanliness: the rooms and towels should be clean and fresh. Read recent reviews.
  • Clear price: the menu should show what is included (steam, scrub, mask, massage) and the duration.
  • Real products: black soap, a kessa glove for you and real argan oil, not a cheap mixed oil.
  • Trained staff: massages should be relaxing and never painful. Do not hesitate to say if the pressure is too strong.
  • Transfer: a hammam with hotel pickup avoids taxis in the evening.

What to do after your hammam

Your skin will be very soft and sensitive to the sun for a day. Avoid sunbathing straight after, drink plenty of water and enjoy a calm evening. Many guests book their hammam the evening before their flight home: they travel relaxed and clean after a week of sun and sand.

Plan your relaxing day

A hammam fits perfectly in a slow day: morning at the beach, lunch at the marina, hammam in the afternoon. See our 3-day Agadir itinerary and our list of things to do in Agadir, or browse all activities in Agadir.
